Monday morning message

“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” – Bob Marley
“The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower
Dear Academy friend,
It was a bloody scene!
We had great Evaluations on Saturday with impressive demonstrations by members of both Junior and Adult JKD programs.
But that’s not where the blood was shed!
Afterwards some of us stayed back and had a spirited discussion about the topic of the past few weeks: belts and ranking systems.
Although, the general consensus is that as a JKD school we’re on the right path not using belts, but having a definite, visible coloured ranking system.
But to be quite honest, there was some strenuous devil’s advocating from some Academy members as to whether we aren’t going too far and giving ourselves too much work “trying to educate the masses”.
It was even suggested that we should consider conducting some kind of business experiment to see if we’re right.
Maybe one day I will but for right now here’s the more pressing “experiment”.
Like many others in the Academy, I’m not happy with the transitions between Evaluations and Graduations.
So I’ve tasked a couple Academy “JKD Juggernauts” to keep me on task with ensuring that we have the t-shirts and certificates ready on a timely basis from here on in.
We’re also going to ensure that we conduct regular “progress check striping” so everyone’s aware of just where they are in the ranking structure.
I’m making it a public announcement by putting it into this morning’s message and running the risk of embarrassing myself if I fail in this endeavour.
In addition to deadlines and/or accountability partners, sometimes making public declarations is a good way to ensure you do what you’ve gotta do.
What about you? What do you do to ensure that you keep up your part of a bargain?
Now go out and conquer the world,
